Stress and Anxiety: How to Stay Out of the Danger Zone

Perhaps the only benefit of stress and anxiety is they spur people to take necessary action or changes in their lives. When danger is imminent, they make us think of ways to avert it or push us to move out of its path. The danger can be anything that threatens our physical or mental well-being, such as losing a job, concerns about health, and solving domestic problems. In these types of situations, stress and anxiety can be our allies because they enable us to look after our best interest.

The danger zone of stress and anxiety

Stress and worrying stop being helpful allies when they prevent us from taking action. Paralysis can be caused by worrying excessively about things that are beyond our control or things that we imagine can happen, making us feel helpless instead of empowering us to act. For whatever reason, excessive worry and anxiousness can burden us with stress that can cause health risks. For instance, uncontrolled worrying and nervousness can damage our health if they develop into an anxiety disorder.

Managing anxiety and stress

Because of the potential health risks involved in too much stress and anxiety, you need to focus on getting them out of your system. Initially, you need to know whether an attack is imminent or in progress. Below are some practical steps to you can use.

Learn to relax despite pressure

When you feel stress and anxiety symptoms start to kick in when you’re losing concentration, then you need to take a break. This is nature’s way of warning you that you’re having a system overload and you need to slow down. Take some deep breaths to release some tension. Stay calm and do some more breathing as you clear your mind of negative thoughts.

Keep yourself physically active

Sitting in front of your computer week in and week out can pump you full of stress and zap your energy. Get revitalized by stretching or exercising for a few minutes. It could be brisk walking, riding a bicycle, or jogging around your neighborhood. The idea here is to be physically active to stimulate your brain to produce those “feel good” chemicals known as endorphins, which can greatly lift your mood.

Let calm reasoning prevail

Avoid reaching abrupt conclusions in any situation; instead, think calmly and logically for the best solution. Assess the stress-triggering problem realistically, and don’t blow it out of proportion. Never allow emotions to interfere with the thinking process. By consistently practicing this, you are training your mind to take things in a more relaxed manner instead of getting all hysterical and panic-stricken.

Allow yourself to make mistakes

Don’t punish yourself for making mistakes because they are part of learning. Don’t let negative criticisms make you think poorly of yourself, and learn to replace self-criticism and negative thoughts with positive ones. Try to catch yourself once you feel that you are having some negative thoughts about yourself.

By declaring a full-time war on anxiety and stress, you’ll notice that the quality of your life will improve. It may not be that easy but you should put up a good fight and never give up. You will owe your success to your tenacity and stubbornness in wrestling with your emotional demons. Learn to identify and neutralize anxiety symptoms before they get a hold on you first. Many anxiety disorder sufferers fought back and were able to overcome their problems. So, relax and come out fighting.
