Mindfulness, Meditation and Coaching

Stillness

How do we get to the point where we can listen to our deepest desires when there is so much clutter in our minds?  How can we turn off our minds’ constant chatter, which often feels like a runaway train, and find the stillness that we need to tap into our inner wisdom?

Stillness in our lives is so rare, and has not been generally valued in our Western world for eons.  With the types of multi-tasking lives that our culture “seems” to demand of us, the concept of finding time for stillness can seem beyond our grasp.  And yet, we need to make the effort to find the time to be still, because stillness will not magically appear if we do not value it and are not open to it.

You used to know stillness.  As a child, you may have sat for hours as you built the most elaborate house out of blocks.  You were focused on just one thing, and that was placing each block exactly where you wanted it to go.  Nothing else mattered, and nothing else was running through your little mind.  As adults, we have lost this capacity to revel in the moment, and be present and still. As Jon Kabat-Zinn says, it has become all about doing and not about being.

Mindfulness and Meditation

That precious stillness can be rediscovered through the practice of mindfulness.  I say “practice” because mindfulness is not something that comes naturally to most of us. We have become habituated to the constant chatter of our minds.  Instead, mindfulness is all about paying attention, on purpose, and non-judgmentally, in the present moment.  A wonderful way to discover how you can live your life in a mindful way is through mindfulness meditation.  To learn more about mindfulness meditation, check out this brief YouTube video of Jon Kabat-Zinn as he discusses “What Is Mindfulness”.

Meditation and Coaching

Even if you are not a practicing meditator, a brief meditation at the beginning of a coaching session can be very calming and peaceful, and open up a space for discovery and creativity.  It can also help you move more easily through the process of identifying and removing the roadblocks that have kept you from getting in touch with who you are, and how you want to live your life – Awakened and inspired!
