I was talking with a friend the other day about the ego. “Ego” is such a broad term, with many connotations. But in this conversation, it had to do with how our egos are so tied to expectations and judgment. And as soon as we slip into judgment mode, we become stuck, struggling to move forward as we focus our energy on, well, judging.
Realize that the only place on which to focus is the present, fully engaged in the process of whatever we are doing and experiencing. Even as we identify goals and make plans to take steps to reach those goals, it is the process of getting there that is the joyful journey. It offers us such a wonderful opportunity to grow, and we miss out on that is we are constantly judging where we are on our path. This is not the same thing as objectively noting where our process is taking us, and making adjustments on the way. We can make these “course” corrections without feeling as though they were mistakes. They are all part of the process of getting to wherever we are headed.
I always remember a comment from Tama Kieves‘, whose workshop, “Unleash Your Calling: An Intensive to Create the Work and Life You Love”, I attended last year at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. They were just two little words, with an enormous meaning and impact” “Choose again.”. I remember those words every time I start to feel as though I am headed in the “wrong” direction – I know that I can always “choose again”!
So, whether you have made a decision to move forward on your own, with the help of friends and family, or with the support and guidance of a life coach, remember…… it’s the journey that matters.
